Kubik Live Maret 2022: “Why School Librarian Matters: Preparing the Students for Succes in Higher Education”

Pada hari Rabu, 23 Maret 2022, APISI menyelenggarakan kembali program rutin bulanan yang kami beri nama Kubik Live (Kumpul Bicara Ilmu Kekinian) dimana para Pekerja Profesional Informasi Sekolah dapat berkumpul dan bertukar informasi mengenai hal-hal terkini di bidang perpustakaan dan kepustakawanan. Kubik Live kali ini mengusung tema: “Why School Librarian Matters: Preparing the Students for Succes in Higher Education.” Adapun pembicara pada sesi tersebut adalah Bapak Chandra Pratama, M.Sc (Head of Collection Devolopment Petra Christian University Library), dengan moderator Kak Irma Yaunita.

Kubik Live adalah program adaptasi dari Kubik yang biasanya diselenggarakan secara tatap muka. Menjawab tantangan keadaan, kami para pengurus APISI pun tetap berinovasi untuk menyampaikan perbincangan hangat-kekinian seputar dunia kepustakawanan yang disajikan secara daring kepada para peserta setia APISI.

Acara dimulai pukul 14.00 WIB dengan dibuka oleh moderator dan sambutan pembukaan oleh Kak Hanna Chaterina George, SS., M.I.Kom. selaku Presiden APISI. Pada sesi ini, Kak Hanna menyampaikan bahwa topic Kubik Live kali ini pernah disampaikaan saat event Scholar Life pada tahun 2021, topik ini sangat menarik dan idealnya patut diketahui oleh para pustakawan. Maka lewat event Kubik Live ini dihadirkan kembali.

Data Penelitian

Pemarapan Bapak Chandra dimulai dengan data penelitian internasional dan nasional yang berkaitan dengan School Librarian dengan poin-poin sebagai berikut; Performa siswa terlihat sangat signifikan dalam reading comprehension, dan kemampuan mengekspresikan ide /gagasan secara efektif, banyak kegiatan membaca di sekolah dan nilai tes yang baik pada siswa dengan perpustakaan sekolah yang baik dan dilayani oleh School Librarian (Haycook, 1995), School Librarian memberikan dampak positif dalam keberhasilan akademik, reading skills, perilaku membaca siswa. (Yoo, 1998) Performa akademik yang lebih baik (pada hasil-hasil tester standarisasi) pada siswa yang memiliki professional librarian yang terlibat dan perencanaan dan pengajaran dengan guru di kelas (Lance, 2001), dan hubungan kolaboratif antara guru kelas dan pustakawan sekolah memiliki dampak yang signifikan terhadap pembelajaran, terutama dalam kaitannya dengan perencanaan unit pembelajaran, pengembangan koleksi sumber daya, dan penyediaan pengembangan professional bagi guru (Michele, 2003).

Kesimpulannya keberadaan School Librarian itu tidak hanya cukup pada, namun bisa berdampak positif dan School Librarian-nya butuh untuk terlibat dan aktif. Aktif terlibat dalam perencanaan pembelajaran serta perlu ada program perpustakaan yang terkait dengan pembelajaran di kelas. Hal ini bisa terwujud dengan adanya kerjasama dengan guru dan kepala sekolah. Selain itu ada hasil penelitian yang menarik bahwa Pustakawan (Sekolah dan Perguruan Tinggi) telah melakukan upaya untuk memeriksa apakah dan sejauh mana instruksi perpustakaan sekolah menengah memengaruhi perilaku penelitian begitu siswa masuk keperguruan tinggi? Hasilnya memberikan bukti bahwa siswa dari SMA dengan teacher-librarian lebih akrab dengan konsep penggunaan perpustakaan dasar, ide dasar tentang bagaimana informasi diatur dan dapat diakses, dan bagaimana menggunakan katalog online berdampak pada perilaku siswa ketika di perguruan tinggi.

Rethink of librarianroles: Bukan hanya penjaga buku

Praktik di negara maju School Librarian juga terlibat dalam pembelajaran dan bekerjasama dengan guru atau dosen di kelas. Sedangkan untuk menjaga buku atau pelayanan disebut dengan staf perpustakaan dimana tidak dibutuhkan kemampuan khusus terkait pendidikan atau pelatihan tentang perpustakaan. Adapun Teacher-Librarian Skills meliputi mengajar literasi informasi: jenis sumber informasi, perumusan strategi penelitian, pemilihan dan evaluasi sumber, dan teknik untuk mengatur dan merekam informasi tentang bahan yang ditemukan. Kedua, terlibat aktif dalam menumbuhkan dan mengembangkan kemampuan membaca dan menulis. Ketiga, memfasilitasi penggunaan teknologi dalam pembelajaran siswa. Skill ini tentunya menjadi tantangan yang cukup berat, jika kita sudah berada di zona nyaman dan enggan belajar atau berubah.

Peran berikutnya bagi School Librarian adalah Advocating & Collaborating yaitu berkolaborasi dengan guru kelas dalam pembelajaran dan persiapan bahan ajar.  Berkoordinasi dengan kepala sekolah terkait dengan perkembangan perpustakaan serta memfasilitasi penggunaan teknologi dalam mendukung pengajaran guru. Dan ketiga peran yang bisa dikembangkan School Librarian adalah Creative Services meliputi mengelola website perpustakaan dengan materi, materi yang mendukung pembelajaran, mengadakan workshop menulis essay, pembelajaran bahasa, menulis motivation letter untuk perguruan tinggi, mengadakan kegiatan story telling, human books, membahas music, penggunaan music di perpustakaan, klub buku, klub film, public speaking.

  1. The school librarian is unique and essential part of a learning community
  2. Qualified school librarians lead effective school libraries
  3. Learners should be prepared for college, career, and life
  4. Reading is the core of personal and academic competency
  5. Intellectual freedom is every learner’s right
  6. Information technologies must be appropriately integrated and equaitably available

Di akhir pemaparanya PaK Chandra mengutip Melvil Dewey: “The time was when a library was very like a museum and the librarian a mouser among dusty books. The time is when the library is a school and the librarian in the highest sense a teacher.”

Sebelum mulai ada Tanya jawab, ada testimony dari peserta atas nama Ibu Linawati tentang manfaat bergabung dan belajar Bersama APISI yang mampu memberikan perubahan dan kreativitas dalam mengelola dan menyusun program perpustakaan. Dalam sesi ini respon pertanyaan peserta ada ditulis di kolom chat zoom dan dibacakan kak Irma dan direspon satu persatu oleh pak Chandra. Sampai sesi Kubik selesai acara berjalan lancar dan tetap dikuti oleh 90 an peserta terdaftar. Akhirnya semoga event ini mampu memperkaya wawasan dan membuka pemahaman baru tentang peran pustakawan di sekolah. Salam literasi
